"Standing in shock"

He stands up sliding the rifle sling over his shoulder.  The three “Things” following him are about two cars over.  They see him and begin to growl hungrily at him.  Running over to where Trent is, he pulls out his pistol, and pulls the trigger. Deacon puts two .45 rounds into the back of the one gorging itself on Trent.  It turns around with two gaping holes where the bullets had passed through it’s body.  It growls with blood and slobber dripping from its mouth.  Deacon fires the pistol again, missing because of how bad his hands are shaking.  This “Thing” shifts its weight to lunge at Deacon.  Deacon takes a step back, squeezing the trigger one more time.  This time hitting it in the head.  The creature falls to the ground, and lays there motionless.  Deacon puts his 1911 back in his pants and shoulders the AR.  He takes the scope cover off, pointing it in the direction of the three that had been stalking him.  He squeezes the trigger several times, dropping all three in the hospital gowns.  He then turns his attention to the one that had chased him into the building still stuck in the door.  He puts a 5.56 slug right between the eyes on it’s snarling face.  Cautiously he walks over to where Trent is. He searches for a pulse trying to ignore the gruesome details.  Trent is gone.  Deacon turns as the adrenalin begins to slow, and bends down.  He begins puking, from the sight of all the blood.  He stands up as he wipes his mouth.  There are other people scurrying from the plant, too scared to help.

A patrol car arrives while Deacon stands in shock.  He cannot believe what he had to do to end the attack and that not one of his colleagues are willing to help him. A much worn out officer steps out with his gun drawn

"ARE THERE ANY MORE?”

The yelling officer sobers Deacon, he turns his attention to the officer.

"I don’t think so!”

Deacon shows him his friend and the officer tells him that these “things” are everywhere, and that they are doing the same thing all over the city.   The officer gets back in his patrol car.
