“Isn’t that what we are trying to stop?” #zombie #book2

“Isn’t that what we are trying to stop?” Ben blurts out with a smile in an attempt to lighten the mood.

The unit looks at him as if he has lost his mind.

“You know . . .dead men walking? Get it?” Ben adds making exaggerated, stiff movements.

Ty interrupts Ben, “By the way they were all acting, it’s like they sentenced us to death.”  Not seeing the humor in the bad pun, the unit continues towards their vehicles. As the men reach their vehicles and stand around looking at each other. Surprising to everyone, Jayce turns to Paul.

“Will you swing by a store and pick up some beer?” He asks.

“Coronas?” Paul clarifies.

Jayce nods with a smile, adding that they will meet back up at the beach.

“Do you mind stopping by my house and picking up Anne?” Pat asks Andre.

“We all wanted to hang out with her anyway, definitely your better half,” Andre sarcastically remarks.

“We will meet you guys there.” Jayce states.

Ben and Ty once again race for the passenger seat in the Jeep. This time, Ben makes it to the seat first.

“Dead men walking!” #zombie #book2

“Boss, is calling.  We will see you in the morning.”  Andre states as they leave her.

Andre and Paul catch up to the other members of the unit.

The corridor directly outside the theater is packed with the high ranking officials and their assistants.  Their post debriefing conversations are loud as the men enter the corridor.  Once they see the unit approaching, their conversations grow mute.  Not a single word is spoken as the crowd begins to part to allow the unit to pass.

Jayce hears Ty mumble and turns to see what he had said, but finds him looking straight forward.  Deciding that whatever he had said is better left alone in the present company, Jayce does not question Ty further on the matter.  He notes that not a single person is willing to make eye contact with any of them.  He turns around to look back towards the door, wherein the doorway stands Stan and Tracy.  He returns his attention back to his men as they leave the corridor and move towards the military police on post.  The two soldiers salute the unit.

“Have a good night, guys.” Jayce politely offers.

The unit has not spoken a word to each other since the presentation.  Once clear of the door, Jayce questions Ty on what he had said in the corridor.

“Dead men walking!”  Ty repeats.

“It’s a little hard to swallow, isn’t it?” #zombie #book2

Tracy sits still, stunned by what she has learned.  Stan sees the men preparing to leave and begins to approach.  Jayce, Ty and Ben move in to meet him halfway.

The silver haired man extends his arm.  As Jayce reciprocates the motion, Stan pulls the Captain in and wraps his arms around him.

“You guys need to be careful!”  Stan cautions with concern painted across his face.

Jayce nods, breaks free of Stan’s hold and walks solemnly towards the door.  Ty and Ben shake the Colonel’s hand before catching up to Jayce.  Pat and Adam leave from where they had been sitting, and briefly stop to salute the Colonel.  Andre stands and raises his arms above his head to stretch.  As he joins his brothers, he alone notices Tracy still sitting in silence.

“Tracy, you good?”  He questions as he puts a hand on her shoulder.

“Sorry, what did you say?”  She asks, startled.

Andre, again, asks her if she is alright.  Her eyes quickly glance around the room and then lock on his as she explains that she will be.

“It’s a little hard to swallow, isn’t it?”

She anxiously nods her head.  Paul, who had waited behind with Andre, makes an attempt to change the topic and he inquires as to whether or not she will be at the hanger in the morning.  She only nods in acknowledgment to the question.  Tracy looks towards the door.  Paul and Andre’s eyes follow.  Jayce’s silhouette is motioning for them to join him.

"You and your unit will report to Hanger Thirteen C"

“Captain, at 0600 hours, you and your unit will report to Hanger Thirteen C.  We will have the layout of the compound as far as we know it, painted on the floor.  You and your men will run drills over it until you have every step memorized.  You will have twenty hours to make it perfect.  I apologize for the time restraints, but we do not have the gift of time on our side.  On Monday at 0200 hours your transport will depart for the desert.  Everyone else in this room, right now, will be staying here until your boots are safely back on American soil.”

The Colonel begins showing drone surveillance footage of the compound.  He points out key features around the complex, and then moves around showing the perimeter.  As he finishes, he explains that there will be a gunship overhead and that as soon as they are clear, that gunship will make it “rain”.  After two hours of briefing, the conference is adjourned.  The audience quickly and quietly exits the theater.  Jayce and his men are the last to remain seated.  Stan, still at the podium, reorganizes his notes.  Jayce is the first to stand and his men follow.

“So, what are we supposed to do?" #zombie #book2

Not taking it to heart, Ty jokingly questions, “So, what are we supposed to do?  Shoot them in the head?”

“First Sergeant Jensen, this is no joke.  This same group has been around for a long time, their network spans the globe and their members are not hood rats.  They are high ranking government officials along with other key individuals needed to accomplish their goals.  In fact, they have tried this once before.  The world called it the Third Pandemic.  It started in 1855 and disappeared in the 1950’s.  Governments covered it up by telling the public it was Bubonic plague.  The creatures that were developed at this time were nicknamed Alphas, the casualties from the after math were called Scabs.  Scabs were the results of people being fed upon, and were barely able to move after being infected.  Both types had a ferocious hunger for flesh.  We believe that they have refined and perfected their research.  So, to answer your question about how to kill them, do what you need to.  We don’t have any Intel on these creatures or if they even exist, but we want your unit to be ready for anything.”

Jayce catches Tracy cover her mouth in horror as she listens to the briefing.

“Sir, what are the specifics of the mission?” Jayce asks, as he has never backed down before and he is not about to start now.

"Human-like corpse creatures.” #zombie #book2

“We have received intelligence of an imminent attack on the United States.  There is an unidentified group that is in Kashmir, Pakistan.  We already have Corporal Ryker’s unit there who have been imbedded in the region for the past six months.  The groups mission is to create world peace through the complete dismantlement of the militaries of the world.  This will ultimately end in the complete demise of every single government in the world.”

He glances towards Captain Granger’s unit and continues.

“Captain Granger, and his unit, will rendezvous with Ryker’s unit in Kashmir.  Their goal is to procure Intel, and kill any opposition they come in contact with.”

As Jayce listens, he whispers to Ty that nothing sounds out of the ordinary with this mission, but then questions the extreme emphasis on terminating the opposition.

The Colonel answers a few mundane questions from the audience and then continues.

“This mission may include something you have never encountered before . . . human-like corpse creatures.”

What side chatter had been going on comes to an abrupt halt.

“What?” Jayce blurts out in disbelief.

“Captain Granger, I know that this sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but it is a legitimate possibility and is a threat we are still trying to authenticate.  We believe the creatures were once human.  The rumor is that they died due to being genetically altered and then became reanimated.”

“Is what we are doing here this serious?” #zombie #book2 #delta

Jayce comments that he has never seen this much traffic at “ops” right before a mission.  The remainder of the unit focuses in on their Captain’s words.

“Whatever this is, I think we are at the center of it.” Andre adds to the suspicions.

Sergeant Woods is waiting for them outside the theater.  She stands, saluting Captain Granger.

“Is Dad in there?” Jayce asks her.

She nods, wearing a worried expression on her face.

He opens the door to find only seven chairs left.  The chairs meant for his team sit front and center in the dimly lit room.  He subtly glances around at all the high ranking officials gathered in one room at the same time.  Everyone turns their eyes towards the team as Jayce and his men enter the room.  They take their seats next to the Colonel in the small auditorium facing a large projection screen.

“Is what we are doing here this serious?” Jayce leans over whispering to Stan.

The Colonel does not answer, but stands up to take his place in front to address the group.

Sergeant Woods sits down in the Colonel’s seat next to Jayce.  After being ignored by the Colonel, Jayce leans over and asks her if “this” is really this serious.  She interrupts him, putting her index finger against her lips, as Colonel Wallace begins to speak.  He thanks them regrettably under the circumstances, and then begins.

“Hell, I didn’t need the coffee to sober me up" #zombie #book2

They patiently wait for the rest of their unit and discuss the possibilities of where they might be going and what type of mission it could be this time.  The team has seen every type of mission that could have ever been conjured up.  They look up to see the round headlights of Jayce’s Jeep coming towards them.

“Sorry, I had to stop and get these two coffee.” Jayce points to Ty and Ben, who sip out of a convenience store, coffee cup.

Ty takes a sip, “Well, boys, let’s go see where the hell they are sending us this time.”

The lights inside illuminate the unusually high movement inside at the late hour, even through the mirrored glass.  Jayce turns the Jeep off and they start towards the building as a team.  They climb the large, concrete steps to the entrance.  Ben opens the door for Jayce, and holds it for the others as they enter the large foyer.  The unit respectfully salutes the military police standing guard at the door before looking down the branching corridors.  There is even more movement then they had seen from outside.  Jayce leads the way to the “Theater”.  The anticipation builds as they contemplate their mission and discover the traffic they had seen from the parking lot was primarily made up of officers and not the paper pushers.  It is clear that whatever it is that has brought them here, this night, is bigger than anything they have seen.

“Hell, I didn’t need the coffee to sober me up.  Seeing all the brass walking around is taking care of it.” Ben mumbles to Jayce.

“I have an uneasy feeling about this" #zomnie #book 2

Paul is the first to arrive in the parking lot, surprisingly full of cars.  He backs his car into a stall, opens the door, swings his feet out and waits.  Ten minutes later Andre, Pat and Adam arrive.  Andre pulls straight into the stall next to Paul and rolls down the window.

“Sorry. . . I followed Pat and Anne back to their house.” Andre explains as Paul looks through the car to see Pat in the passenger seat.

Paul gets out of his car and looks around for the jeep.  He leans with his back against his car as he poses the question, “Where the hell is the boss?”

Adam pokes his head out from behind the driver’s seat of the sports car.

“They were behind us, but they turned off into a gas station.”  Paul shrugs.

Paul looks at the command center and then turns back to his comrades.

“I have an uneasy feeling about this.  Something just feels off this time.  It’s makin’ the hair on the back of my neck stand up.”

“Think Dad is watching the clock, waiting for us?” Andre continues, referring to Stan.

“Nope, he probably already knows we’re here.”   Paul stares towards the command center.

“Yes, sir!” #zombie #book2

The waitress watches this unfold, reads the frustration on his face.  She walks over and gently puts her arm around his back to make sure that he is ok.

“It’s just my dad, we don’t really get along.”

One of the other tables motions for her to take their order.

“I’ll be back.” She promises.

Ty also has watched Jayce’s response to the phone call and returns to the table.  He asks Jayce if it was his dad and Jayce nods.  His phone begins to vibrate once again.  Ty points towards the phone.

“What?”

Ty watches as Jayce’s facial expressions change to a more serious nature and listens.

“Yes, sir!”

Jayce sits for another moment and then once again, “Yes sir!”  The call ends.

He looks at Ty, “Round up the unit. We’re up.”

Ty immediately leaves the table as ordered.  Andre and Paul are the first to return, and then quickly followed by the rest of the unit.

“The Colonel just called, we are to report to base in one hour.” Jayce explains.

“Hi, Dad.” #zombie #book2

He looks down at the napkin to see a name and phone number.  He looks up towards the bar to see the waitress smile and give him a flirty waive.  He picks it up, folds it in half and tucks it in his pants pocket, too anxious to smile back.  Anne motions for the waitress to return and Anne introduces them to each other.  They are abruptly interrupted as she is called over to tend to another table.  Throughout the evening the other guys would wander back making small talk before returning back to the dance floor.  The waitress would stop by between waiting on tables.

“Dance with me.”  Anne stands up, takes Pat’s hand and leads him to the dance floor, leaving Jayce alone at the table.

Jayce sits smiling as he watches everyone enjoying themselves when he feels his phone vibrating and pulls it out of his pocket.  The screen flashes revealing a picture of his mother and answers it.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Jayce, it’s your dad.”  Jayce hears on the other end.

“Hi, Dad.”

“Jayce, I just have one question.  Are you being forced out?  What did you do?”

“No, this is my decision.” Jayce responds, angered by his father’s condescending tone.

Hearing all of the noise through the phone, his father asks him where he is.  Jayce begins to tell him that he and his unit went out to a club.  Before he can finish, his dad interrupts him telling him that the bottle is probably what got him kicked out of the army.   Jayce forcefully reiterates that he is not being “kicked” out and that he is having a Coke and hangs up the phone before laying it face down on the table.

“I told you.” #zombie #book2

Ben interrupts the conversation as he tells Ty that it is his turn.  Ben’s text message ring tone goes off.  He opens the message, reads it and then advises the other two that the remaining four men in the unit will meet them there.

“Even Pat and Anne are going to make it this time?”  Jayce asks and Ben nods.

“Good!  We can toast to Granger’s new life.” Ty offers as he goes towards the bathroom.

                                                            #

The bass thumps in their chests, as the three walk into the club.  They choose a table in a corner, with an unobstructed view of the front door and the rest of the club out of habit.  From there, they can watch everyone in the club along with all of the doors leading in and out of the club.  It is not as if they are expecting trouble, but their training has them programed to anticipate it.  The other members of the unit meet them there, and without hesitation, will know exactly where to find them.   The members of the unit, with the exception of Pat, his wife Anne, and Jayce, wander off to look for girls to dance with and if they may be so lucky to take home.  Pat leaves for the restroom.  Anne stays behind with Jayce and he asks her how she and Pat are doing.

“Good, I’m just excited to go out.  We all live on the edge of our seats waiting for you guys to get called up.”

Jayce nods with a smirk in agreement.  Pat rejoins them at the table.  The cocktail waitress saunters over to take their order.  Anne watches as the waitress keeps looking at Jayce.  As she walks away, Anne leans over to tell Jayce that the waitress was into him.  He blows it off in disbelief with a hint of embarrassment.  A short while passes and the waitress brings the drinks and sets them down on napkins, smiles at Jayce and walks away.  He takes a drink and Anne and Pat begin laughing.

“What?” Jayce asks.
“I told you.” Anne says giggling, as she points towards his napkin.

“Honing your skill?” #zombie #book2

“Whatever!”  Jayce says as all three laugh.

On the drive home, Ben jokes that maybe if Jayce would have a couple of drinks, he would be able enjoy himself.

“I can have fun.  I just have more serious things to deal with.”

Arriving back at the apartment, Ben and Ty race back up to the apartment hoping to be the first to get through the shower.  Jayce takes his time on his way up the stairwell.  Once he makes it into the apartment, he finds Ty sitting on the couch playing video games.  Jayce laughs a little to himself as he sees that Ty is playing a First Shooter game.

“Honing your skill?” Jayce asks jokingly.

“Yes Sir, Captain Granger, Sir.”

“You’re such a smart ass.”  Jayce states as he takes a seat on an adjoining loveseat.

Ty turns his attention from the video game as he pauses it, “Hey?”

“What?” Jayce answers.

Ty inquires whether there is any particular girl that he is going back home for.  Jayce explains that he really does not know if he will stay in Fredrick very long due to the fact he believes that it may be too close to his father.  He goes on to explain that home sounds like a good starting point.

“Come one, we will find Miss Right at the club.” Ty shrugs then almost tearing up, explains that the unit just will not be the same without him.

“You two are clowns.” #zombie #book2

Both ask what made him decide to take this path.  He reiterates to them that he wants to move on with his life.

“Going from taking out objectives, to changing diapers and cleaning the house.”  Ty snickers in disbelief.

They pull into the shopping complex and all three get out.  Ty puts his arm around Jayce’s shoulders and both Ty and Ben express their happiness for him.

“Just make sure you keep in touch with us. Oh and feel free to name your first boy after me,” Ben adds.

“What do you plan on doing once you’re out?”  Ty asks.

“I don’t know, maybe be a cop or firefighter?  I haven’t really got there in my planning.”

You always have a plan for everything, how can you not have one for this?”

“I just know this is what is meant for me and what I have to do.”

“Well, I’ve never not trusted you before and I am not going to start now.”

After sometime they find suitable clothes that Jayce will agree to wear.  They make the unanimous decision to walk down to the food court.  As they enter the food court, Ben comments on how the best part of Florida is all of the Puerto Rican restaurants and that it is also his greatest downfall.  He continues to explain that it makes him homesick for his mother’s cooking.  Ty then asks for a volunteer to drive them to the club, even though Jayce always volunteers simply for the fact he is the only person in the group that never drinks.  As usual, the captain volunteers.  The three men watch as a group of local girls wearing short shorts and bikini tops walk towards them.   Jayce glances at Ben and Ty.  He watches as the two men in what they think is subtle, flex in their cutoff t-shirts.

“You two are clowns.” Jayce says laughing.

“We are not.  We are gladiators sent to the colosseum for our country.” Ty confesses while making an attempt to keep a straight face.

Don’t worry #zombie #book2

Ben walks into the room, announcing that it is Friday and that they are going to go to the club.  Jayce is not a big fan of that sort of thing.

“Let’s just call the guys and hang out here.”  Jayce attempts to talk them out of the club.

“Granger, get ready.  We are partying tonight.  Besides, we don’t know when we are going to get called up again.” Ty interjects.

Jayce tells them that he needs to go and get some new clothes if they are going out.  Ty and Ben both offer to go with him, explaining that his fashion sense is “less than stellar”.  Ben then races Ty to Jayce’s jeep.  Ty makes it to the front seat first and Ben climbs into the back seat.  As they pull away from the parking lot, Ty pulls out his mp3 player.

“You two better not get all amped up and start shit with any civilians while we are out.” Jayce warns, knowing it will be some sort of heavy metal that Ty will put on.

Jayce reaches over and turns down the stereo.   He begins explaining what had been discussed in the Colonel’s office, his plans to retire.  Both grow silent.  Concerned, Ben asks him who is going to take command of their unit.

“Don’t worry.  I am staying around long enough to make sure you guys have somebody who will keep you both in line.”  Jayce jests.

“Mission?” #zombie #book2

It is evident by the tone in his father’s voice that he is skirting around the fact that Jayce is thirty-six years old and that he does not want him moving back into their house.

“Don’t worry, Dad, I’m going to get my own place.”

His dad begins back-pedaling to cover up his intentions.  Irritated by the unforeseen direction the conversation is going, Jayce tells his mother that he will call her “tomorrow”.  He hangs up the phone, and tosses it back onto the passenger’s seat.

The phone rings as he pulls into his apartment complex.

“What?” Jayce answers.

“Where are you?”  The voice asks excitedly.

“Ty, look out the window.”

Jayce peers up at his apartment balcony, the blinds are pulled back and then the phone hangs up.  He shakes his head as he grabs his things out of the back seat.  There is no telling what his roommates, Ty and Ben, have planned.  He mumbles to himself that they must make the strangest trio, but there is not anybody else in the army he would rather have running point on his unit.  He begins to climb the stairs to his apartment.

As he opens the door, he is greeted by Ty.  “Granger, so what did the Colonel want?”

“I needed to talk to him about something.”

“Mission?”

“No.  We’ll talk about it, later.”

“Sir, is this what I think it is?” #zombie #book2

The Colonel stands back up, Jayce follows.  Stan walks back around the desk and the two men shake hands.  Jayce salutes the Colonel in respect as Stan excuses him.  On his way out, Jayce bids Tracy farewell.  Stan and Tracy watch as Jayce disappears down the long corridor.

“Sir, is this what I think it is?” Tracy asks.

“Yes, it is, Sergeant.”

                                                            #

Jayce returns to the front doors where he salutes the Military Police at the security checkpoint.  Shielding his eyes from the bright sun with his hand, he walks down the stairs and across the parking lot to where his vehicle is parked.  As he pulls away in his jeep, he reaches for his phone sitting on the passenger seat.  He begins to scroll through his contacts and anxiously presses send.

He hears his mother voice as she answers his call.  Inquisitively, he asks her where his father is.  She responds by telling him that he is sitting next to her.  Expecting his parents to be ecstatic with his news, he requests that she put him on speaker phone so that he can speak to them both.  Jayce takes a deep breath before announcing that he would be moving back home to Fredrick, Maryland.  He continues by explaining that he feels that it is time.  The other end of the phone goes silent.  Stunned, yet excited, his mother asks him why.  Again Jayce reiterates that, “it just feels right.”  His father then asks if he will be getting his own place or if he would be moving back into their home.

A New Beginning #zombie #booktwo

“Is this what I think it is?”  Stan slides his wire rimmed glasses down past the bridge of his nose as he looks over the top of them towards Jayce.

“Yes sir.  I think it’s time for me to leave Delta and start a life for myself outside of the army.”

“So . . . start a family and stay in.”

“Sir, I don’t want to have any more secrets.”

“Captain, I can respect that.”

Stan taps the long edge of the envelope on the top of his desk.  He takes a deep breath, then asks him how long until he will be finished. Jayce explains that he would give him a couple of months to find a suitable replacement for him.

“Do the guys know?”  The Colonel questions.

“Not yet.”  He simply answers.

“Is your head straight, soldier?”  Stan smirks as he knows the level of Jayce’s drive.

“Yes, Sir!”  Jayce smiles in return.

“There are missions in the works that I had anticipated you would run.” Stan explains and Jayce nods in acknowledgement.

“Are you positive that you want out?” Stan asks him again.

“I have never been more sure of anything.”  The Captain explains.

The meeting #zombie #book2

“Captain Granger, Sir, the Colonel is expecting you.”

“Thank you, Tracy.”

She casually glances down at the envelope.  He looks at the name tag on the door, it reads Colonel Stanly Wallace.  She invites him to have a seat while he waits.  He graciously accepts her invitation.

Several minutes pass before the door opens.  Tracy and Jayce immediately stand and salute the Colonel.  Only after abiding protocol, the Colonel warmly greets him with a hand shake.

“Jayce.”  The Colonel states as he firmly grasps Jayce’s forearm with his free hand.

“Stan.”  Jayce smiles back.

Stan motions toward the open door leading inside his office.  Jayce enters the room and looks around at all of the commendations and pictures of dignitaries from around the globe.   Two flags stand tall behind the Colonel’s desk, setback at each corner.  One is the flag of the United States of America and the other the symbol of the Army.  Once the door is closed, both men dispense with the small talk.  Jayce stays standing until Stan makes it to his seat behind his desk.

“So, why did you request to see me?”  The Colonel asks.

Jayce takes a seat in one of the two chairs and then slides it closer to the front of the desk.  Without a word, Jayce sets the envelope on the desk tapping the closest corner to him and then pushes it with his index finger across to the Colonel.  Jayce pulls his hand back as he sits up straighter in the chair.

Jayce's introduction #zombie #booktwo

The sharp clicking of dress shoes echoes through the halls of the Special Forces’ joint command center.  Both officers and their assistants roam the corridors in their semi-formal uniforms, as they do like any other day.   Their monotonous pattern is interrupted by the not so formal sound of flip flops.  They turn and pause as a sandy-blond man with uncharacteristically long hair and a two-day old beard approaches.  His khaki shorts and t-shirt make him appear out of place.  The only thing discerning him to be a soldier is the rigid posture he keeps.  He has both been on and led teams that have carried out missions of monumental proportions.  The personnel he passes, quickly glance from his appearance to the sealed envelope in his hand.

At the end of the long corridor, he enters the small office space adjacent to his Colonel’s office at fifteen hundred hours sharp.  The Colonel’s assistant, Sargent Woods greets him.  The secretary, stands up hurriedly to salute him.  Nervously, she hits her knee against the desk and her coffee sloshes out of the mug.  He asks her to sit down as the protocols are not needed.  She tugs at her pressed skirt to straighten it out before searching through her desk drawers for anything to clean up the mess.  She watches as Jayce picks up the coffee mug and wipes up the mess with the bottom of his t-shirt.  Puzzled as to why he would do this, she still thanks him for the gesture.
