“Captain, at 0600 hours, you and your unit will report to Hanger
Thirteen C. We will have the layout of
the compound as far as we know it, painted on the floor. You and your men will run drills over it until
you have every step memorized. You will
have twenty hours to make it perfect. I
apologize for the time restraints, but we do not have the gift of time on our
side. On Monday at 0200 hours your
transport will depart for the desert.
Everyone else in this room, right now, will be staying here until your
boots are safely back on American soil.”
The Colonel begins showing drone surveillance footage of the
compound. He points out key features
around the complex, and then moves around showing the perimeter. As he finishes, he explains that there will
be a gunship overhead and that as soon as they are clear, that gunship will
make it “rain”. After two hours of
briefing, the conference is adjourned. The
audience quickly and quietly exits the theater.
Jayce and his men are the last to remain seated. Stan, still at the podium, reorganizes his
notes. Jayce is the first to stand and
his men follow.
