A New Beginning #zombie #booktwo

“Is this what I think it is?”  Stan slides his wire rimmed glasses down past the bridge of his nose as he looks over the top of them towards Jayce.

“Yes sir.  I think it’s time for me to leave Delta and start a life for myself outside of the army.”

“So . . . start a family and stay in.”

“Sir, I don’t want to have any more secrets.”

“Captain, I can respect that.”

Stan taps the long edge of the envelope on the top of his desk.  He takes a deep breath, then asks him how long until he will be finished. Jayce explains that he would give him a couple of months to find a suitable replacement for him.

“Do the guys know?”  The Colonel questions.

“Not yet.”  He simply answers.

“Is your head straight, soldier?”  Stan smirks as he knows the level of Jayce’s drive.

“Yes, Sir!”  Jayce smiles in return.

“There are missions in the works that I had anticipated you would run.” Stan explains and Jayce nods in acknowledgement.

“Are you positive that you want out?” Stan asks him again.

“I have never been more sure of anything.”  The Captain explains.

The meeting #zombie #book2

“Captain Granger, Sir, the Colonel is expecting you.”

“Thank you, Tracy.”

She casually glances down at the envelope.  He looks at the name tag on the door, it reads Colonel Stanly Wallace.  She invites him to have a seat while he waits.  He graciously accepts her invitation.

Several minutes pass before the door opens.  Tracy and Jayce immediately stand and salute the Colonel.  Only after abiding protocol, the Colonel warmly greets him with a hand shake.

“Jayce.”  The Colonel states as he firmly grasps Jayce’s forearm with his free hand.

“Stan.”  Jayce smiles back.

Stan motions toward the open door leading inside his office.  Jayce enters the room and looks around at all of the commendations and pictures of dignitaries from around the globe.   Two flags stand tall behind the Colonel’s desk, setback at each corner.  One is the flag of the United States of America and the other the symbol of the Army.  Once the door is closed, both men dispense with the small talk.  Jayce stays standing until Stan makes it to his seat behind his desk.

“So, why did you request to see me?”  The Colonel asks.

Jayce takes a seat in one of the two chairs and then slides it closer to the front of the desk.  Without a word, Jayce sets the envelope on the desk tapping the closest corner to him and then pushes it with his index finger across to the Colonel.  Jayce pulls his hand back as he sits up straighter in the chair.

Jayce's introduction #zombie #booktwo

The sharp clicking of dress shoes echoes through the halls of the Special Forces’ joint command center.  Both officers and their assistants roam the corridors in their semi-formal uniforms, as they do like any other day.   Their monotonous pattern is interrupted by the not so formal sound of flip flops.  They turn and pause as a sandy-blond man with uncharacteristically long hair and a two-day old beard approaches.  His khaki shorts and t-shirt make him appear out of place.  The only thing discerning him to be a soldier is the rigid posture he keeps.  He has both been on and led teams that have carried out missions of monumental proportions.  The personnel he passes, quickly glance from his appearance to the sealed envelope in his hand.

At the end of the long corridor, he enters the small office space adjacent to his Colonel’s office at fifteen hundred hours sharp.  The Colonel’s assistant, Sargent Woods greets him.  The secretary, stands up hurriedly to salute him.  Nervously, she hits her knee against the desk and her coffee sloshes out of the mug.  He asks her to sit down as the protocols are not needed.  She tugs at her pressed skirt to straighten it out before searching through her desk drawers for anything to clean up the mess.  She watches as Jayce picks up the coffee mug and wipes up the mess with the bottom of his t-shirt.  Puzzled as to why he would do this, she still thanks him for the gesture.
